Overview

Climb Tanzania's second-highest peak (4,566m) - a spectacular and less-crowded trek often used as acclimatisation for Kilimanjaro, with wildlife on the lower slopes.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut: 10Km (6.3 Miles), Time 3 - 5 hours, Elevation 1500. (4921 feet) - 2514, (4921 feet)

Day 2

To Saddle Hut: 4km (2.5 miles), Time 3-5 hours, Elevation 2514m ( 8,248 feet) - 3500m (11,483 feet). Afternoon Hike (Little Meru) 2km (1.2 miles) round trip, Time 1-2 hours, 3,820m (12,532 feet) for better acclimatization

Day 3

To Summit Socialist Peak: 5Km (3.1 miles) Time 4 - 6 hours, Elevation 3,500m (11,483 feet) - 4,562m (14,968 feet). Descend to Miriakamba.

Day 4

Exit from the Mountain to the hotel.

Best Season to Climb

The best time to trek Mount Meru is June to February, with the driest and clearest conditions from June to October and December to February. Meru is an excellent acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. We avoid the long rains of April-May when the summit ridge can be dangerous.

Yes. Many climbers do Meru first to acclimatise, its 4,566m summit is excellent conditioning before attempting Kilimanjaro.
Why is an armed ranger required?
Mount Meru lies in Arusha National Park, home to wildlife such as buffalo and elephant, so a park ranger accompanies every group for safety.
How difficult is the summit day?
Summit day is long and steep along an exposed crater rim, an early start and a head for heights help, but no technical skills are needed.
Will I see wildlife?
Very likely on the lower slopes, giraffe, warthog, buffalo and colobus monkeys are commonly seen in the park.
